My Retired Doctor Can Help You Close Your Medical Practice

We’re almost done with the first quarter of 2018. What’s your take so far? Has your daily routine become too mundane? Are you thinking of retiring and closing your medical practice up? If you are, there is a long list of things that need to be considered and taken care of before you can shutter the building. It can be an overwhelming and stressful process, but it will be worth it when you sail off happily into retirement. Here are a few things to keep in mind when you are thinking of retiring and closing your medical practice:

Patients

First and foremost, you need to let your patients know what is going on. They will need to find an alternate physician, and they should be given plenty of time to do so. Have a conversation—or send out a mass communication—to inform your current patients that you will be retiring. In addition, be sure to stop taking on new patients.

Employees & Vendors

Other stakeholders in your retirement decision are your employees and vendors. Your staff worked hard for you and should be treated fairly. Make sure to give them plenty of notice and maybe even make some calls to colleagues to see if any are hiring. In addition, be sure to let your vendors know that future shipments of office and medical supplies should be put on hold.

Insurance & Regulations

In addition to patients, employees and vendors, you will need to have a conversation with your insurance provider. Determine the best course of action for insurance going forward and set yourself up right for the future. You will also need to contact your medical boards to inform them of your impending retirement.

Office Space

Last, but not least, you’ll need to deal with your office space. If you lease the space, it’s as simple as informing your landlord that you will be leaving. If you own the facility and land, then you’ll need to work with a realtor to put it up on the marker—if you choose to do so. After that’s dealt with, you will need to determine what to do with the contents of your space. That includes, tables, desks, chairs, and medical equipment. Medical records and patient documents are part of the contents of your medical practice and these files need special attention.
