Stay Engaged and Healthy

Those heading into retirement often think it’s their time to completely veg out and relax. However, studies show that those engaged in meaningful hobbies and passions, or that stay active are the happiest in retirement. Although many retirees are not able to participate in strenuous activity, even simply getting out for walks or joining a YMCA exercise program can be a great start. If you’re unable to keep your body active, keeping your mind active is a great alternative!

Consider a Part-Time Job

Leaving a job and slipping completely into retirement can be a huge adjustment. Not only do you go from having a set schedule and a job to keep you mentally engaged, but you are also required to get out of bed and interact with people on a daily basis. That is why many retirees seek a part-time job that not only keeps them financially stable, but also mentally stable. If your current employer won’t let you scale back to part-time, then consider getting work as a consultant or project manner elsewhere. You can put your years and wealth of knowledge to work for others, and feel fulfilled even in retirement.

See Your Children and Grandchildren

Working at least 40 hours a week and being chained to a set schedule can often wreak havoc on travel plans and relationships. However, now that you are retired, now is a great time to start reaching out to your children and spending more time with them, and your grandchildren if you have any. For those unable to keep working, watching your grandkids a few days a week is certainly another way to find fulfillment and stay mentally engaged.

Keep a Schedule

Just because you’re no longer bound by a 9 to 5 job doesn’t mean that you should completely lose a schedule. While you don’t want to keep a schedule as rigid as the one you had while you were working, having goals and events scheduled can give you something to work towards and look forward to. A schedule can help you avoid boredom, loneliness and even depression.
